→ ALL THE THINGS I'M LOVING: “The more mechanical people to whom life is a shrewd speculation...
I saw a group of nuns, stooped over shop doorways and corporate art shelters, dishing out steaming doses of soup to hungry people. The unfortunate creatures huddled in groups, fighting off the unseasonal cold and gratefully accepting steaming mugs with trembling hand. I looked on in fascination, realizing that every bedraggled character still wore a look of defiance, knowing that this charity was only accepted by necessity and not by choice. Nevertheless, they said their thank yous and a single Hail Mary without fail, not wanting to offend their Christian benefactors.
In this way I felt that the downtrodden tramps, who held their hands out begging, were provided a service of their own. They didn’t have to say anything, nor acknowledge the kindness of the nuns, but they did it regardless, providing these sisters with a bizarre emotional charity that they did seem equally grateful for. After all, no man can survive without food, and what there is no church without the needy.
So touched was I by the scene, that I let my poised and loaded shotgun fall to my knee, got back in my car and thought to myself… not today
